SAND BEACHES

While sand beaches may appear rather innocuous in a biogeochemical respect, major transformations of dissolved terrestrially-derived material occur along the subterranean estuary below the beach surface. The rates and pathways for these transformations have a significant influence on the biological response of the coastal ocean. We are using novel tracers, and field based measurements to unravel the complex geochemistry occurring along the beach face subterranean estuary.
