Due to a current lack of knowledge regarding the role of groundwater in Intermittently Closed and Open Lakes or Lagoons (ICOLLs) and there abundance on the Australian coastline, Mahmood Sadat-Noori has used his expertise to research these dynamic systems. The research took place in Bribie Island in 2013 over four seasonal surveys. It was found that almost 90% of water inputs to

the ICOLLs came from groundwater. The research ressulted in the publication: Intermittently Closed and Open Lakes and/or Lagoons (ICOLLs) as groundwater dominated coastal systems: Evidence from seasonal radon observations in the Journal of Hydrology in 2016.
